For a generation soup kitchens,
shelters and food pantries in New Jersey have provided nutritious food
and a supportive atmosphere to those most in need. Because we provide
these services, we understand that the problem of hunger and homelessness
cannot be solved by this one dimensional approach. Our response to the
problem requires a broadening of the discussion to focus on the social
and economic factors that become barriers to self-sufficiency. Unfortunately
these very factors are causing the number of people who lack enough food
and adequate shelter to "increase" rather than decrease.
